Concerts with Dudamel and Harnoncourt

Three musical events in Vienna with Gustavo Dudamel - a youth concert presented in collaboration with the Konzerthaus Society and "passwort:klassik"; a concert in the Konzerthaus on September 23rd and the 1st Philharmonic Soirée the following day - served as a transistion to the "Vienna Philharmonic Week" in New York, which this year was moved forward from the usual time in March to September/October in order to make it possible for the orchestra to take part in this season's Carnegie Hall opening.

This opening concert (with which our orchestra was entrusted for the second time since 1999) and the "Vienna Philharmonic Week" in New York were preceded by a concert in Danville, Kentucky. On September 27th, Gustavo Dudamel conducted the "New World Symphony", Berstein's "Divertimento", Ravel's "Pavane" and "Bolero", as well as the encore, the "Pizzicato Polka" by Johann Strauss.

Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Lang Lang were our protagonists for the official "Carnegie Hall Opening Night Gala" on September 29th, at which time the Beethoven program described above was performed. On the next day, Nikolaus Harnoncourt conducted a performance of  Bedřich Smetana's symphonic cycle "Má vlast", while Gustavo Dudamel concluded the "Vienna Philharmonic Week" for the season 2010/2011 with two concerts. On October 2nd, he conducted the program with Rossini, Orbón, Bernstein and Ravel, and on October 3rd, when in addition to the "Tragic Ouverture", and the "New World Symphony", the concert featured only the third appearance of Yo Yo Ma with our orchestra (after concerts at the Salzburg Festival in 1982 und 1992), who performed the Cello Concerto of Robert Schumann.

Following its return, the orchestra repeated one of the tour programs at three additional concerts. On October 5th, 6th, and 7th, 2010, in the Brucknerhaus in Linz, as a subscription concert, and for the 2nd Philharmonic Soirée, Nicolaus Harnoncourt conducted Smetana's "Má vlast".
