At the 71st Ball of the Vienna Philharmonic, which was held on January 19, 2012 in the Musikverein, Christoph Eschenbach conducted (for the second time since 2010) the opening consisting of the overture to the operetta "Eine Nacht in Venedig (A Night in Venice)" by Johann Strauss. For the entry procession of the honorary committee, Karl Jeitler conducted Gottfried von Freiberg's "Ausseer Fanfare" and the "Wiener Philharmoniker-Fanfare" by Richard Strauss.

During the ball in the Golden Hall, the Helmut Steubl Ball Orchestra" and the Tom Henkes Dance Band alternated in providing dance music. Ball chairman Andreas Großbauer again organized an exceptionally rich programm of additional musical entertainment comprised of eleven different (Philharmonic) ensembles, and was supported in his organizational activitites by the ball committee composed of Rotraut Konrad, Kammersängerin Marjana Lipovšek, Dr. Hannes Androsch and Vienna State Opera Director Dominique Meyer. The preparation of the debutante procession was in the capable hands of Professor Thomas Schäfer-Elmayer.
