Dr. Clemens Hellsberg
Following a series of rehearsals in Vienna, the orchestra departed on an extended European tour with Lorin Maazel which began on September 6, 2013, with a BBC Proms Concert in the Albert Hall in London, where approximately 6,000 people attended the performance of Anton Bruckner's 8th Symphony. The next day the orchestra appeared in Redefin (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern) performing Bruckner's 8th which was preceded by the Concertino for Clarinet and Orchestra in E-flat major, op. 26, featuring Mattias Schorn as soloist. On September 10th in Lübeck, the Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra by Friedrich Cerha (Soloist: Martin Grubinger) and the Symphony Nr. 5 in D minor op. 47 ("The Formation of a Personality") of Dmitri Shostakovich were performed as well as the overture to Michail Glinkas opera "Ruslan and Ludmilla" as an encore.
A concert at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris on September 11 with Bruckner's 8th Symphony was followed by a notable evening in Freiburg. If one were to count the numerous concerts and opera performances in Vienna and in Salzburg as well as performances for diverse special occasions (Philharmonic Ball, etc.) they would have totaled on this evening 500 appearances with our Honorary Member, Lorin Maazel. This evening the program consisted of Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Suite for Orchestra No. 3, G major, op. 55 and Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5. On September 14/15 the Vienna Philharmonic put in its customary guest appearances at the Lucerne Festival. Here Lorin Maazel conducted Bruckner's 8th and the program of Cerha and Shostakovich which was also performed on September 17/18 in Frankfurt and Cologne.
