Prof. Reinhard Öhlberger
The regular Vienna Philharmonic appearances in Paris have become institutionalized in many ways in the past few years. They began over 20 years ago, in October 1993 with Seiji Ozawa, and were instigated by the director of the Théatre des Champs-Élysés at that time, Dominique Meyer, for whom our orchestra was considered worthy of its own concert series. This close association, which features frequent appearances in Paris, continued under the directorship of Michel Francks.
On January 20, 2015, under the baton of Philharmonic newcomer Rafael Payare, the orchestra presented a variation of the program performed the previous weekend in Vienna. In the first half of the concert, instead of compositions by Strauss and Maazel, the "Unfinished" Symphony of Franz Schubert was heard. After the intermission, the Symphony No. 4 by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky was performed. As an encore the fast polka "Mit Chic", op. 221 was played, no doubt still fresh in the audience's memory from the most recent New Year's Concert.
