The Vienna Philharmonic has invited for the first time Tugan Sokhiev to conduct the 2027 New Year's Concert. The orchestra's artistic collaboration with Tugan Sokhiev began in 2009 during an Asian tour in Seoul. This was followed by joint appearances at subscription concerts in Vienna and in many other cities around the world. In 2025, in addition to subscription concerts and a European tour, he conducted for the first time the Vienna Philharmonic Summer Night Concert, as well as the gala concert celebrating the 200th anniversary of Johann Strauss, Jr.

Tugan Sokhiev is also a sought-after opera conductor. From 2014 to 2022 he was Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow. He has also appeared at many other of the world's leading opera houses, such as the Metropolitan Opera in New York and the Vienna State Opera, where he conducted, among other compositions, the premiere series of Tchaikovsky's Iolanta.

The training of young musicians is a particular passion of Tugan Sokhiev. He has been actively involved with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra Academy and in 2016 founded his own conducting academy in Toulouse.

The chairman of the Vienna Philharmonic, Daniel Froschauer, comments on this invitation, "Tugan Sokhiev has been a close musical and personal friend of our orchestra since 2009. Our first performances together quickly fostered a strong sense of mutual musical trust and understanding, which since that time has continuously deepened and developed. We look forward with much anticipation to our future projects and the upcoming New Year's Concert."
