Modules 2022
Stage Music
Stage music includes all the instrumental musical action that takes place on stage or backstage during an opera performance.
Stage music is required for the following operas in 2022:
- G. Puccini: Il Trittico
- W. A. Mozart: The Magic Flute
- G. Verdi: Aida
The participating musicians commit themselves to being available for the respective opera production with all performances.
The rehearsals are determined by the Summer Academy in consultation with the Salzburg Festival and may be postponed in the agreed period depending on the daily rehearsal schedule of the Festival.
Participation as part of the stage music activities during the Summer Academy is paid.
The selection of participants for the stage music will be made by the jury during the selection process. The participants will be informed in due time.
When the activities for the stage music begin, the chamber music course for the respective players will take place in parallel.
Participants in the stage music module will also receive individual lessons with a focus on audition repertoire.
Chamber music and string orchestra
Within the framework of the chamber music course, various works will be performed by different ensembles, which will be put together by the juries in the course of the selection procedure. It is planned that each ensemble will include a member of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra who will teach the work to be studied and perform it in the concerts. Participants can be assigned to several chamber music groups. The works to be studied will be communicated before the beginning of the course and the sheet music will be available for download under a link. We ask all musicians to prepare their parts individually before the course.
The string orchestra is an extended chamber music project without a conductor, which will be rehearsed and conducted by Volkhard Steude, concertmaster of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Mr. Steude will also perform as a soloist in the programme and will be accompanied independently by the ensemble. The aim is to practice listening to each other, reacting and making music independently as part of a group, developing group sound and a shared musical vision. The main work will be the String Serenade by P. I. Tchaikovsky.
Participants in the chamber music and string orchestra modules will receive one 60-minute unit of individual tuition per course week with a focus on audition repertoire.
Orchestra
The orchestra project will be led by a different outstanding conductor each year, who will rehearse an entire evening-long programme with the young musicians, including a solo work and a major symphony.
In the summer of 2022, we are very much looking forward to Mr Tomáš Hanus, Music Director of the Welsh National Opera. He is a regular guest at the Vienna State Opera and numerous international opera houses and orchestras.
Programme for the orchestra concerts:
- Z. Kodály: Dances from Galanta
- C. M. v. Weber: Clarinet Concerto No. 2 (Soloist: Daniel Ottensamer)
- J. Haydn: Sinfonia Concertante
- A. Dvorák: Symphony No. 8
The group rehearsals will be conducted by members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.
Young musicians from the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra Academy will perform Haydn's Sinfonia Concertante as soloists.
Participants of the orchestra module will receive one 60-minute unit of individual tuition per course week with a focus on audition repertoire.
Audition preparation course
The audition preparation course is a 5-day intensive course that begins with a simulated audition in front of a jury consisting of members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. This is followed by an evaluation with the definition of the goals to be worked on. The course then consists of daily lessons of 90 minutes each, with piano accompaniment if required. The course concludes with another audition simulation under authentic audition conditions with final assessments and explanations by the audition jury.
The choice of instruments for this audition preparation course is based on the upcoming auditions for the 2022/23 season at the Vienna State Opera.
In summer 2022 it will be offered for the following instruments: trumpet (german system) and violoncello.
The audition preparation course is not coupled with other modules of the Summer Academy and can be attended both additionally and as a stand-alone course.
