The Angelika Prokopp Summer Academy of the Vienna Philharmonic promotes the training of young orchestral talent.

Summer Academy 2023

The Summer Academy 2023 will take place over a period of approximately 4 weeks. After the selection process, the participants will be assigned to the individual modules by the jury, whereby the contents are structured as follows:

All Summer Academy participants take part in the Orchestra module. This is held from 5 to 13 August. 

In addition, there is the possibility of being invited to further modules after evaluation by the jury: 

Chamber Orchestra 29.07. - 23.08.

Chamber Music for Strings + Chamber Orchestra 24.07. - 23.08.

Stage Music, Chamber Music for Winds + Chamber Orchestra 20.07. - 25.8. (Macbeth) / - 31.8.(Falstaff)*

Participants in the chamber music, chamber orchestra and stage music modules will also receive individual tuition from members of the Vienna Philharmonic as part of the audition training and will take part in an audition simulation in front of a jury during the Summer Academy. 

For the participants taking part in the orchestra module, workshops with an audition programme for the individual instrument groups are planned.

Selected participants in the chamber orchestra module will also be offered a one-week stay at the Krzysztof Penderecki European Centre for music, during which they will rehearse a demanding program under the direction of conductor Jurek Dybał (more information under modules).
The period for this project is July 2-9, 2023.

About the modules

General information

  • Auditions

    Application for the Summer Academy is possible either by video recording OR by audition in Vienna. Only for the instruments Viennese oboe, Viennese horn and Viennese timpani and percussion the selection takes place exclusively by audition in Vienna.

    The evaluation of the auditions as well as the video applications will be carried out by a jury consisting of members of the respective instrument group of the Vienna Philharmonic. 
    For the programme, please refer to the information on the auditions for the respective instruments.

  • Dates

    Registration deadline: 7 April 2023 (Viennese timpani and percussion: 22 March 2023)

  • Course location

    Classes take place at the Musikum Salzburg, Schwarzstraße 49. 

    The building has sufficient rehearsal and practice rooms, a large concert hall with around 200 seats and a small chamber music hall, is acoustically appealing, offers a lot of comfort and is open daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. for the academy period (19 July to 22 August).

    The course content of the chamber music, chamber orchestra and orchestra modules will be performed in several concerts.

  • Accommodation

    In the Kolpinghaus Salzburg in 2-bed rooms with bath/WC incl. breakfast  
    (for participants in Stage Music in single rooms with bath/WC incl. breakfast)

    Accommodation in a single room in the Kolpinghaus is subject to an extra charge (€ 37,- / night) depending on availability and should be requested at the time of registration. 

    The Kolpinghaus is within walking distance of all course venues and is an 18-minute walk from the main railway station.

    For the time of the Summer Academy from 24.07. to 21.08., one meal per day (2 courses, main course optionally vegetarian) is provided at the Musikum (excluding concert days, if applicable).

  • Covid-19

    Participants will be informed in advance about any Covid-19 security concept that may be required.
    The course management reserves the right to take individual security measures in addition to any legally required measures to combat the Corona pandemic at the time of the Summer Academy.

    € 180,- for the Orchestra module and Masterclass

     

    The costs for board and lodging are supported by the Vienna Philharmonic

    Additional charge for single room (except stage music): € 37,- /night

Application 2023

Applications and participation are open to young musicians of all nationalities. 

Age limit: 16 - 28 years

Application deadline: until 07.04.2023 (video application and auditions), except percussion: 22.03.2023

For information on the compulsory programme, as well as on the modules and the corresponding course dates, please see the respective instruments below.

Applications for all instruments (except Viennese oboe, Viennese horn and Viennese timpani and percussion) can be made either by video recording or live-audition. Only one of the two application forms is to be chosen. Applicants who are able to travel to Vienna for the audition are advised to use this option. We ask for your understanding that travel expenses cannot be reimbursed. The dates and the programme for the auditions can be found under the respective instruments.

All applicants who are unable to travel to the auditions have the opportunity to apply by video recording. The videos should consist of a continuous recording without cuts for the compulsory piece and for the orchestral parts and should be accompanied by piano.  

Please note some important points for the recording of your video application:

  • For optimal evaluation (dynamics etc.), the recording should be made in high quality (formats mp4, avi, wmv, mpg or mov).
  • Please ensure a frontal full-body shot
  • The following platforms can be used at your discretion: Youtube, Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive
  • Please refrain from long piano introductions as well as interludes
  • Please insert the links for your uncut, unedited videos in the fields provided
  • Please make sure that the videos have been approved for viewing!

Your entered data and documents will of course only be used for processing within the framework of the selection procedure for the Academy of the Vienna Philharmonic and will under no circumstances be used for other purposes or passed on to third parties. 

For Viennese oboe, Viennese horn and Viennese timpani and percussion there is no possibility for video application.

We also ask for an up-to-date CV with contact details and a photo.

If your application is successful, you will receive an automatic confirmation email and will be admitted to the video application or invited to the audition. You will receive further information on the location and meeting point for the selection match by email a few days before the date.

The candidates will be informed of the jury's decisions by the beginning of May and will receive individual invitations to the modules of the course. Before the end of June, the chamber music works and the division of the ensembles as well as the section division for the orchestra will also be announced. Subsequently, the scores for the stage music, chamber music, chamber orchestra and orchestra modules will be made available. 

Upon successful completion of the selection process, applicants agree to participate in the academy and to pay a deposit of € 100,- (non-refundable).
