Application 2024
Applications and participation are open to young musicians of all nationalities.
Age limit: 18 - 28 years
Application deadline: until 10.03.2024 (video application and auditions), later: Viennese horn
For information on the compulsory programme, as well as on the modules and the corresponding course dates, please see the respective instruments below.
Applications for all instruments (except Viennese oboe, Viennese horn and Viennese timpani and percussion) can be made either by video recording or live-audition. Only one of the two application forms is to be chosen. Applicants who are able to travel to Vienna for the audition are advised to use this option. We ask for your understanding that travel expenses cannot be reimbursed. The dates and the programme for the auditions can be found under the respective instruments.
All applicants who are unable to travel to the auditions have the opportunity to apply by video recording. The videos should consist of a continuous recording without cuts for the compulsory piece and for the orchestra excerpts and should be accompanied by piano. Please record all required orchestra excerpts (in maximum 2 video files).
Please note some important points for the recording of your video application:
- For optimal evaluation (dynamics etc.), the recording should be made in high quality (formats mp4, avi, wmv, mpg or mov).
- Please ensure a frontal full-body shot
- The following platforms can be used at your discretion: Youtube, Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive
- Please refrain from long piano introductions as well as interludes
- Please insert the links for your uncut, unedited videos in the fields provided
- Please make sure that the videos have been approved for viewing!
Your entered data and documents will of course only be used for processing within the framework of the selection procedure for the Academy of the Vienna Philharmonic and will under no circumstances be used for other purposes or passed on to third parties.
For Viennese oboe, Viennese horn and Viennese timpani and percussion there is no possibility for video application.

We also ask for an up-to-date CV with contact details and a photo.
If your application is successful, you will receive an automatic confirmation email and will be admitted to the video application or invited to the audition. You will receive further information on the location and meeting point for the selection match by email a few days before the date.
The candidates will be informed of the jury's decisions by mid April and will receive individual invitations to the modules of the course. Before the end of June, the chamber music works and the division of the ensembles as well as the section division for the orchestra will also be announced. Subsequently, the scores for the chamber music and orchestra modules will be made available.
Upon successful completion of the selection process, applicants agree to participate in the academy and to pay a deposit of € 100,- (non-refundable).
Ariadne auf Naxos
As an additional project this year, the Summer Academy is taking part in a concert production of the opera Ariadne auf Naxos at the Richard Strauss Days in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The project will take place in June before this year's Summer Academy. Further information can be found here.
If you are interested in this special project and are available in Vienna at the specified time, please let us know by email after you have registered for the audition that you would also like to be considered for Ariadne!

Viennese Horn
Selection takes place via live-audition | Application period until 31.03.2024.
Audition:
23 April 2024, time: 3 pm, place: Wiener Staatsoper
The audition takes place together with the audition for the position of the Orchestra Academy of the Vienna Philharmonic. To apply for the Summer Academy, it is absolutely necessary to register on this page.
Works to be performed:
- R. Strauss Horn Concerto No. 1 op. 11 1st movement (piano accompaniment will be provided)
- Orchestra excerpts: Siegfriedruf, Tchaikovsky 5, Till Eulenspiegel, Carmen, Italian in Algiers, Ariadne, Götterdämmerung
