The Angelika Prokopp Summer Academy of the Vienna Philharmonic promotes the training of young orchestral talent.

Summer Academy 2022

The Summer Academy 2022 will take place over a period of 6 weeks, the participants will be assigned to individual modules by the jury after the selection process, whereby the contents are structured as follows:

Stage music and Chamber Music for wind instruments 19.07 - 31.08.*

Chamber Music for Strings and String Orchestra 30.07. - 23.08.

Orchestra 08.08. - 23.08.

Audition Training Seminar 22.08. - 27.08.**

All participants will additionally receive individual lessons with members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.

General information about the Summer Academy

Auditions

In order to participate in the Vienna Philharmonic Summer Academy, one must face a jury of Philharmonic members from the respective instrument group. Applications for all instruments except the Viennese oboe, Viennese horn and Viennese timpani and percussion are made by video recording of a compulsory piece and orchestra excerpts and run until 30.04.2022.

For the programme, please refer to the information about the auditions for the respective instruments.

The jury reserves the right to hold a further selection round in Vienna for selected instruments after the video selection has been made.

Course location

Classes take place at the Musikum Salzburg, Schwarzstraße 49.

The building has sufficient rehearsal and practice rooms, a large concert hall with around 200 seats and a small chamber music hall, is acoustically appealing, offers a lot of comfort and is open "around the clock" for the duration of the course for the academy students.

The course content of the chamber music/string orchestra and orchestra modules will be performed in various concerts.

18.08.2022 Concert at Konzerthaus Berlin, Festival YEC (Orchestra)

21.08.2022 Concert at Goldegg Castle (chamber music)

22.08.2022 Final concert in the Great Hall Mozarteum Salzburg (chamber music, string orchestra, orchestra)

Stage music (wind/percussion):

Accommodation in a single room in the Kolpinghaus is possible for an additional charge (€ 25.-/night) and should be requested at the time of registration.

The Kolpinghaus is within walking distance of all course locations and is an 18-minute walk from the main railway station.

Covid 19

Participants will be informed in advance about the planned Covid19 security concept. The course management reserves the right to take individual security measures in addition to any legally required measures to combat the Corona pandemic at the time of the Summer Academy.

Audition Training Seminar:
The course fee for the audition seminar is € 500,-.

Those participants who only attend the audition seminar also pay € 20,- / night excess accommodation.

Application 2022

The application and participation is open to young musicians of all nationalities.

Age limit: 16 - 28 years | audition training seminar: 20 - 30 years (deadline 30.06.2022)

For information on the compulsory programme for the video application, as well as the instruments offered for each module and the corresponding course dates, please see the respective instrument group below.

Applications for all instruments except Viennese oboe, Viennese horn and Viennese timpani and percussion will be made by video recording. The videos should consist of one continuous recording without cuts for the compulsory piece and for the orchestral parts and can be with or without piano accompaniment.
A current curriculum vitae with contact details and a photo are also requested.

Please note some important aspects for the recording of your video application:

For an optimal evaluation (dynamics etc.) the recording should be made in high quality (formats mp4, avi, wmv, mpg or mov).
Please ensure a frontal full-body shot
The following platforms can be used at your discretion: Youtube, Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive
Please refrain from long piano introductions as well as interludes
Please insert the links for your uncut, unedited videos in the spaces provided.
Please ensure that the videos have been approved for viewing!

Your entered data and documents will of course only be used for processing within the framework of the selection procedure for the Academy of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and will under no circumstances be used for other purposes or passed on to third parties.

The jury reserves the right to hold a further audition in Vienna for selected instruments in the event of a large number of applications.

For Viennese oboe, Viennese horn and Viennese timpani and percussion the auditions will take place in Vienna. The application deadline for the auditions is 09.04.2022. For date and location, see Instruments.

Applicationis via the corresponding link on this page. If your application is successful, you will receive an automatic confirmation email and will be invited to an audition where it applies.

Candidates will be informed of the jury's decisions by 20.05.2022 and will receive invitations to the individual modules of the summer academy. By mid-June, the chamber music works and the allocation of the ensembles as well as the allocation for the orchestra will also be announced. Subsequently, the scores for the stage music, chamber music, string orchestra and orchestra modules will be made available.

If the selection is successful, the applicants commit to participating in the academy.
