Applications

Application guidelines

Interested musicians who on August 31, 2026, have completed their 18th year but not yet their 28th year are invited to submit their applications using the form found on this page below.

Application until December 31, 2025:

  • Violoncello

Application until January 2, 2026:

  • Viola
  • Double bass

Application until January 5, 2026:

  • Violin

Application until January 31, 2026:

  • Vienna Horn

In addition to your personal data, the following documents must be submitted:

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Photograph
  • Proof of Study (in the case of a completed bachelor)
  • Video Application (The video application contains your interpretations of the required solo repertoire and orchestral excerpts in un-cut and un-edited form.)

Please make note of the following important points when recording your video application:

  • For an optimum evaluation (dynamics, etc.), the recording should be made in high quality (formats: mp4, avi, wmv, mpg or mov).
  • The recording should show a full front view of the candidate.
  • You may choose from the following platforms for the upload: Youtube, Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive.
  • Please do not include long piano introductions and interludes.
  • Please enter only the link to your un-cut and un-edited video in the designated text field at the end of the form.
  • Please make sure that the permissions are set so that we can access your video!

Personal information and documentation uploaded to this website is secure and will be used solely for the purposes of proccessing your application as part of the selection process for the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra Academy. It will not be used for any other purposes and will not be shared with third parties.

Stipends

Academy students will receive a monthly stipend. In addition, they will receive a monthly living allowance, as well as the coverage of the cost of a year's pass for the Vienna Public Transportation System.
For participation on Vienna Philharmonic concert tours, a daily allowance will be paid.
All additional academy program components are available to academy students free of charge.

Vacancies

  • Violin I + II (Application ends January 5, 2026)

    This position is open from September 1, 2026 until June 30, 2028. Applications are being accepted until January 5, 2026.

    Required pieces:

    • W.A. Mozart: Violin Concerto, KV 218 or KV 219, 1st movement with Cadenza - with piano accompaniment
    • Romantic Violin Concerto of your choice, 1st movement - with piano accompaniment

    Orchestral Excerpts (first violin parts):

    • W.A. Mozart: Symphony in E flat-major, KV 543, 4th movement - beginning until end of bar 41
    • R. Strauss: Alpensinfonie - Rehearsal number 138 to 142
    • R. Strauss: Don Juan - first page
  • Viola (Application ends January 2, 2026)

    This position is open from September 1, 2026 until June 30, 2028. Applications are being accepted until January 2, 2026.

    Required pieces:

    • 1st and 2nd movements with Cadenzas of a Classical Viola Concerto (e.g. Stamitz or Hoffmeister) - with piano accompaniment

    Orchestral Excerpts:

    • R. Strauss: Don Juan - beginning until five bars before Figure D
    • A. Bruckner: Symphony No. 4 - Figure C until bar 83
  • Violoncello (Application ends December 31, 2025)

    This position is open from September 1, 2026 until June 30, 2028. Applications are being accepted until December 31, 2025.

    Required pieces:

    •  J. Haydn: Cello Concerto in D major, 1st movement with Cadenza - with piano accompaniment

    Orchestral Excerpts:

    • Two excerpts of your choice - one melodic and one technical excerpt
  • Double bass (Application ends January 2, 2026)

    Required piece:

    • Solo piece of your choice - with piano accompaniment

    Orchestral Excerpts:

    • G. Verdi: Otello - Act IV
    • W.A. Mozart: Symphony No. 40 in G minor, 1st movement - development
    • L.v. Beethoven: Symphony No. 9, 4th movement - Recitativo
