Thomas Lechner, who was born on January 11, 1986, in Schwarzach in Pongau, attended the Private High School Missionshaus St. Rupert in Bischofshofen and advanced to the Adalbert Stifter Musik High School in Linz to complete his secondary schooling, receiving his Matura there in 2005. At the early age of six years he took his first percussion lessons with Franz Götzfried and between 2000 and 2003 completed his preparatory studies at the Anton Bruckner Private University in Linz with Josef Gumpinger and Bogdan Bacanu. Following the two years of study in Linz, he attended the Vienna Conservatory under Josef Gumpinger, augmenting his study there with additional master classes under Anton Mittermayr, Keiko Abe, David Friedman and others.
The studies of Thomas Lechner were accompanied by extensive professional experience. As far back as 1993 he was a member of the town band in Bischofshofen, which was founded by his grandfather, Josef Lechner, and of which his father, Alois, was conductor until 2007. Through his work with the Salonorchester Bischofshofen, the Symphonische Landesblasorchester Salzburg, the European Philharmonic Orchestra and the Jeunesse Orchester in Vienna, he became a regular substitute with the Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra, the Bruckner Orchestra Linz, the Orchestra of the Vienna Volksoper and finally with the Vienna State Opera Orchestra, where after his successful audition, he has been a member of the percussion section since September 1, 2007. He has appeared as soloist in this country and abroad and has won numerous national and international awards, such as a scholarship for the specially gifted from the Sparkasse Oberösterreich, the main prize of "Gradus ad Parnassum", and the Concours International pour caisse Claire in Paris, among others.
