Heinrich Koll studied at the College of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna with Fr. Prof. Steinbauer and Prof. Samohyl, receiving his diploma with distinction in 1975. In that same year he became principal violist with the Lower Austrian Tonkünstler Orchestra. Between 1976 and 1980, he served as principal violist with the Vienna Symphony and in 1980 toured the near east as a soloist, also making numerous appearances as soloist with the Lower Austrian Tonkünstler and other orchestras. In 1980, he became principal violist with the Vienna State Opera Orchestra and the Vienna Philharmonic.
Heinrich Koll has been a member of the Musikverein Quartet (Küchl Quartet) since 1987, performing regular subscription concerts in the Vienna Musikverein and abroad. There have been numerous concerts with the Vienna Philharmonic in which he has been featured as a soloist, among them are those at the Salzburg Mozart Festival and Mozart's "Concertante" with Rainer Küchl and Zubin Mehta for the opening of the Mozart Year 1991 in the Vienna Musikverein. In that same year, he performed Richard Strauss' Don Quixote for CD along with Franz Bartolomey and Andre Previn. This same composition he performed with Mstislaw Rostropowitsch and Seji Ozawa in 2001. In 2004, he made a solo CD recording for the Vienna Philharmonic Soloist Series. The summer of 2004 brought a chamber music tour in the USA, followed by a performance of Mozart's "Concertant" in Spain. This same work was repeated in the Vienna Musikverein with Zubin Mehta in December 2005. In 2006, he also made a solo appearance in Don Quixote in Nagoya, Japan. For many years Heinrich Koll has been a lecturer making solo and chamber music appearances at the Pacific Music Festival Sapporo in Japan and he has also given a master class at the Manhattan School of Music in New York.
