The violinist Erich Schagerl was born in Wilhelmsburg, Lower Austria, and received his first musical training on the recorder at the age of seven, and his first violin instruction at the age of 11. Following grade school in Traisen, he attended the music high school in Krems. During this time, he began to play the clarinet and the saxophone, performing in the Traismaur Town Band, the Krems Jazz Club, and the Big Band Buchberger in Strass/Strassertal. In addition to this he performed on the bass guitar and various other instruments (sax, violin, accordion) with the "New Selection" in Traismauer. Following the completion of his high school education with distinction, he continued his violin studies at the Vienna College of Music with Professor Franz Samohyl. Between 1972 and 1979 he was a member of the Franz Schubert Quartet, winning 1st Prize at the International String Quartet Competition in Stockholm in 1974, and also concertmaster of the Tonkünstler Chamber Orchestra. At this time he was also a violinist in the "Vienna Nonet" (1978-1984) and founded the Concordia Piano Trio". Between 1980 and 1985 he taught a class in the pedagogy department at the Vienna College of Music as well as giving numerous classes at home and abroad (Allegro Vivo, Umea).

Erich Schagerl joined the second violin section of the Vienna State Opera Orchestra and Vienna Philharmonic in 1979, and has been a first violinist since 1985. He has performed much chamber music from 1991-2001 with the Vienna Virtuosi, and has been the leader of the Arcadia Ensemble since 1992. He has made solo appearances at home and abroad with ensembles such as the Slovakian String Soloists. Since 1999 he has worked as an arranger of compositions for various chamber music groups as well as orchestras, including birthday compositions for Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Marcel Prawy and Christa Ludwig. He has been married since 1979 and has two daughters.
