Matthias Schorn, who was born on November 3, 1982 in Hallein, received his first private clarinet instruction in 1990, joined the clarinet class of Georg Winkler at the Musikum Salzburg in 1993, and began his music study as a clarinet major with Johann Hindler at the University of Music in Vienna in 1999. He also took part in numerous master classes, such as those of Alois Brandhofer in Salzburg. He began his professional career in 2004 with the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra. This was followed by engagements with the Deutsche Symphonie Orchester Berlin (2005) and the Munich Philharmonic (2006). After a successful audition he was appointed as first clarinettist of the Vienna State Opera Orchestra as of September 1, 2007.
In addition to his successful career as an orchestral musician, Matthias Schorn has been also active early on as a soloist and chamber musician. He has made solo appearances with such orchestras as the Deutsche Symphonie Orchester Berlin, the Munich Chamber Orchestra, the Russian Chamber Philharmonic St. Petersburg and the Vienna Chamber Philharmonic. He was invited to serve numerous times as a principal clarinettist with the Berlin Philharmonic, the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Bavarian State Orchestra in Munich and many others. As a chamber musician he has joined forces with prominent artists such as Christoph Eschenbach, Ernst Kovacic, Daniel Hope, Eszter Haffner, Daniel Müller-Schott and Milan Turkovic and also appeared with the Faure and Minetti Quartets. In striving for the realization of his own personal sound, Matthias Schorn, who also teaches a clarinet class at the Conservatory of Vienna and serves as the artistic director of the "PalmKlang" Festival in Oberalm, which he himself initiated, is also a member of the "Trio Marc Chagall", the Theophil Ensemble Vienna", and the crossover ensemble "Faltenradio".
